Dancing with a sword or other balance props creates dramatic performances that captivate and impress audiences. They highlight your technical abilities and skills as a performer. Whether you’re using a sword, tray, basket, pot, or other item, good pieces don’t just string together a series of balances or other “tricks” – they integrate the prop into your dance and create a cohesive whole.
In this concentrated two-hour class you’ll learn some of Kristine’s approaches for successful balance pieces. We’ll fit in a much as possible, but the class will be paced based on the needs and interest level of the group. Topics may include:
- Ideas for structuring an effective dance
- Upping the drama factor for super engaging shows
- Using your prop to enhance your dancing and vice versa
- Creating pieces with intention and meaning (including the meaning “check out my cool prop!”)
- Technique suggestions to make balances effortless
- Sneaky tricks that look a lot harder than they actually are
- Anything else you’re curious about – questions welcome!

The Studio
The North Glenmore Park Community Center is easy to get to, but it’s in a slightly hidden location, and not especially well marked from the road. Google and/or your GPS will get you there, definitely look it up before you go. Parking in the lot and on the street is free. There are bathrooms, a change room, and a water fountain available in the building. There are several studios in the community center – to find us turn right from the main entrance, head down the half flight of stairs, and we’ll be in the first door on the right. There’s also a whiteboard at the main entrance that will direct you. You can also ask the office staff where the belly dancers are, they know us!
