The Lineup

We are thrilled to present the following performers at this show!

Lavish

Our headliners are Lavish Dance, coming all the way from Toronto. Audra Simmons and Heather Labonté will be performing for us this evening. Directed by Audra, Lavish is known for their richly textured and evocative work. Constantly creating new pieces, they effortlessly combine technical precision with power and grace to produce cutting edge modern belly dance.

In addition to the show, Audra and Heather are teaching 10 hours of sold-out workshops over the weekend.

Anne-Marie & Lori

Anne-Marie McNaughton has been a member of Calgary’s bellydance scene since 2006. Anne-Marie is a proud member of Heidi Marie’s Bijoux and is a recently certified teacher in Rachel Brice’s Datura format.

Laurel Magnolia found belly dance at the age of 18 and has never looked back, her background is Egyptian, ATS®, and now Datura Style (she is also a certified teacher!). Laurel has been dancing her whole life and will continue to do so until she is old and grey.

Br’Issah

Br’Issah is joining us all the way from Regina, Saskatchewan! Dancers Annissa, Heather, and Lisa came together in 2009. They enjoy sharing their love of belly dance by experimenting with eclectic music to create innovative and evocative choreography.

Jennifer

Jennifer‘s first belly dance love is the earth-shaking shimmies, dramatic floorwork, and veil of American Cabaret Style. Having been dancing since 2002, she studied AmCab extensively under Sandra Catena in New York City. After moving to Calgary in 2013, she was a member of Little Fish Belly Dance under the direction of Serena and Jumanah until 2016. Jenn is currently one quarter of the collaborative Nightingale Belly Dance group. She also teaches those earth-shaking shimmies, and other belly dance topics, for the University of Calgary Recreation.

Meraki

Meraki is an Edmonton based Fusion Bellydance company. Directed by Vanessa Dahlia, the company delivers modern, dynamic, experimental movements with intriguing, thought provoking emotional expression.

Nico

Nico’s healthy obsession with belly dance started very early in 2011 while looking for a way to reconnect with her self after the birth of her son. After a year of learning with instructional shows and DVDs  it was time to find a real life teacher; enter Minya of Jumping Camel Belly Dance! Nico started taking classes in fall 2012 and joined the performance troupe in 2013. She continues to take weekly classes, classes and workshops with other dancers, as well as her self study. Nico is known for her skills with the finger cymbals – should you ever have a chance to see her perform or to study with her, don’t miss out.

Stacie, Alison, Meg, and Marie

These four Edmonton-based ladies have come together to dance just for this show. They describe themselves as a, “random collection of dancers,” who enjoy each other’s company and aesthetics. Spearheaded by Stacie, co-owner of Bedouin Beats, they’re on a mission to make interesting and usually weird work that incorporates belly dance in a modern movement landscape.

Beautiful Unusual

Your hosts for the evening, Beautiful Unusual is the creation of Kristine Jennes. The group experiments with belly dance, re-imagining Middle Eastern movement by exploring different ways to create movement and dance. We play with choreographic form, improvisation, music choice, and costume. Our performances are eclectic and emotive. For Anthologia we will be presenting our performance troupe dancers Kristine, Rachel, Katie, and Lesley.
